God’s Chosen Deliverers

“Therefore You delivered them into the hand of their enemies, who oppressed them; and in the time of their trouble, when they cried to You,
You heard from heaven; and according to Your abundant mercies You gave them deliverers who saved them from the hand of their enemies.” - Nehemiah 9:27

As God’s people are praying, they continue to go through their entire history. In the book of Judges, we learn that because of their disobedience, they constantly fell into the hands of their enemies. God chose different men and one woman, Deborah, to be judges––leaders that would be used of the Lord to help deliver His people.

When God goes to war, He chooses the most unlikely soldiers. He hands over to them the most unusual weapons to accomplish His will. God took care of every problem; His ways confounded their enemies.  Shamgar killed 600 Philistines with an ox goad, and he also delivered Israel (Judges 3:31).

The Lord used Jael, a woman, to kill Sisera, the captain of King Jabin’s army. She killed Israel’s enemy with a tent peg. She placed it right through his temple while he was asleep (Judges 4:17-21).  Gideon was used by God to fight the Midianites, who were as numerous as locusts. He went with 300 men who were not armed with swords or spears. They used simple pitchers with torches, as they blew the trumpets (Judges 6:11-16; Judges 7).  Samson, by the Spirit of the Lord, singlehandedly killed 1,000 men with a jaw bone of a donkey (Judges 15:14-17).

When we come to Christ, we often forget that God wants us to learn how to fight our battles against the enemy with Him (Ephesians 6:10-18). Christians have to recognize their weapons are not of this world.

…For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God
for pulling down strongholds….
~2 Corinthians 10:3-4~
