God's Great Outdoors - George Cheek

June 9, 2014
This week’s program is at Maranatha Bible Camp in Maxwell, Nebraska near North Platte. Gerry and past camp director, George Cheek look back on how the camp had its beginning and some of the events that have occurred at this facility that have impacted lives for eternity. Gerry talks about his first visit, the 10th annual Christian Bowhunters of America National Shoot. There he met George Cheek, and also Burt Harris and Steve Collins, who have not only been guests on God’s Great Outdoors radio program, but have been a part of different events that the ministry has done across the country as well. There is so much more that could be said that has occurred because of the first visit to Maranatha, so time will be spent on this in the next three programs.

Fire, shelter, food and water are the fouressential elements one needs to survive for an extended period in the outdoors. The author of the book “The Ripple Effect”, Todd Freiwald, shares about his youth and learning how importantthese skills were in his outdoor adventures. Coming to Christ and then becoming a father made him realize how important walking with the Lord was. So as his children grew, he developed asurvival program that taught them, not only to survive in the outdoors, but also to survive everyday life by applying principles illustrated in God’s Word to the four survival skills. This is an excellent book to help with mentoring one’s children or in a group setting for churches, ministries,or Christian camps.

This week’s program is a visit with Jeff Swanwho along with a group of 35 men took part in one of the fishing adventures at Rushing WindRetreat Center. He explains how itwas a life changing event and that decisions were made that changed the way he and his wifelive. Exploring how two guys, David Hale who was afarmer, and Harold Knight a barber, got together to design, develop and market turkey calls, is the topic ofthis program. Gerry visits with these two legends in the outdoor world to discover that the only reason theystarted to sell their calls was because there weren’t many turkeys in Kentucky and they hoped to be able tomake enough to buy a non-resident hunting license in Missouri. Giving one of these calls to an outdoorwriter way back when there weren’t many turkeys to start with, created quite a stir. His article in an outdoormagazine drove in hundreds of phone calls to get one of their “turkey tubes” and it just went on from there. Both these men give all the glory to God for what has happened in their lives and they continue to praiseHim as the years roll by.

Exploring, probably the most significant geologicalevent in the 20th century, the eruption of Mt. Saint Helen’s was a turning point for Dr. Steve Austin. As anundergrad geology student he was able to explore and discover firsthand how this catastrophe affected thelandscape, including a one-fortieth scale of the Grand Canyon, in only three days. During this time Dr.Austin switched from a Christian “old earth” geologist, to a “young earth” geologist, believing the biblicalaccount of 6000 years of earth’s age from seeing layer upon layer of earth that was laid down by volcaniceruptions in minutes, not hundreds of thousands of year as he had been taught.

This week’s program is a visit with Kevin Vogt who is one of the staff members from the Centershot ministry. Centershot is a program that is done in churches teaching youngsters how to shoot the bow and arrow and is correlated with learning scriptures and Biblical principles. Those putting on a program in their church also try to incorporate the whole family in the experience, so God’s Word doesn’t just go to the children. Kevin also shares how his “me world” caused the destruction of his marriage and brought him to the lowest point of his life. Praying to receive Jesus Christ changed him and eventually his marriage was restored and he went into full-time ministry.
