God's Great Outdoors

Dean Hulce

From Peanuts to Church Pews

Every one of us at some time in our lives believes that we are facing something that is far too big to overcome.  All too often we use these things as crutches to not have to face the difficult things in life.  We may say we’ll do whatever it takes to get past our struggles, but will we really do it.

On today’s show we will meet a man that learned to cuss as a little boy working with the field works in the peanut fields of Georgia.  He faced obstacles and one day, after losing his mother, he decided from that day forward, he would not want to do anything that would have disappointed her.

God took this boy to great and beautiful places around north America… but more importantly, He took him on a life of spiritual adventure and victory.

In the wilds of far northern Ontario there are places where a person could walk for many days without coming out into civilization.  Some areas you could be attacked by wolves before you ever made it out.   To leave a boy in the wilds in these areas will certainly bring him closer to manhood in a hurry. Around the world there are many different thoughts on when a boy becomes a man or a girl becomes a woman.  In Jewish tradition this happens at 12 or 13 years of age…  But does a ceremony and a party make a child into an adult?  It’s been said that a boy becomes a man when he learns that he is not the most important person in his life.  This is the story on today’s program.

On today’s show we sit at a round table discussion about turkey hunting at our annual God’s Great Outdoors Wisconsin Turkey Hunt.  Our host is joined by 4 of his turkey hunting buddies (Micah Hulce, Rob Knauf, Curt Knauf and Shorty Scheidegger) in a western Wisconsin hunting camp.  We’ll hear discussions of calling turkeys as well as successes and failures in the turkey woods.  We will also look at the struggles and failures we all face in our everyday lives and how a relationship with Jesus Christ can the bad and ugly parts of life to good.

Many of us feel like we have no idea what it would be like to have an addiction.  We look on and think, “that’s what the alcoholic or drug user deals with”.  Today’s guest does a good job of describing what it is like to have an addiction…  He says, “Think about putting your phone away for a week or two with on contact with it”.  It makes you think. What is the first thing you reach for when you wake up?  What is it that you do when you have a little free time most days?  I think that if we are honest we all have had or now have an addiction of some kind in our lives. What we learn today is that overcoming is a hard process and it takes more than worldly programs, it take the Lord and strong Christian men and women around you to get through the hard times.

For many that have lived a sheltered life, today’s show will likely be eye opening.  The story of a man raised in conservative teachings to a life of crime and a return to the teachings of his youth.  One of the best known stories of the Bible is the “Prodigal Son”…  Today’s guest lived it out.  We’ll hear stories chasing moose on the lakes and in the northern bush of Canada, to police chases and chasing cows for competition.  We cover two countries and many stops along the way.  It’s a great story of what the power of God can do in a life, when he’s invited in. Hold to tight for today’s show it’s a fast and bumpy and sometimes surprising ride in and out of God’s Great Outdoors…  A true journey down the trail to many adventures

Sometimes God uses the most common people in the most uncommon ways.  Today’s guest was just such a person and used in just such a way by God.  We started out today’s program with great intentions of sharing some very funny fishing stories and we got sidetracked into the history and God workings in a most amazing way.   Our guest looks very familiar to many and once you hear the program you’ll understand why.  Over and over again you will hear, “God is doing something here” , and He was.  This is one of our favorite programs and the radio portion doesn’t have a lot of what we would characterize as outdoor activity, but the story of what God did in a small town is well worth the listen.  Don’t miss the podcast to get the rest of the story.

Life can be going along smoothly one minute and the next we can be facing death right in the eye. Today’s guests recently came face to face with death and faced it with peace and trust in God.  What looked like certain disaster turned to a joyful opportunity to praise God for His unwavering love for his children. Some of our listeners have faced terrible circumstances in the past or are facing them right now.  Today’s program will give you hope and joy in the midst of trying times.  Come along now and share in the story of an elk hunt gone bad.

In many times of hunting using calls is a big part of the hunt.  Calling game is a great way to be successful in the hunts. You and I all have a calling on our lives.  Sometimes that calling might change in one season of life to the next, But know that God does have a calling for you and He is preparing you to live that calling out. Today’s guest thought he was going to become a professional fisherman.  He thought that was his calling in life.  He soon realized that God was preparing him for something much different, a much higher calling

For men in our world there are not many things more important that the relationships between a father and his son. All too often today we are drawn away by the demands of the world on our time and efforts.   On today’s Trail To Adventure in God’s Great Outdoors we will hear from a pastor and his father-in-law about how God used God’s Great Outdoors and Gerry Caillouet many years ago to make a difference not only in these two men’s lives but through many hundreds of men over the last nearly 20 years.    The Bible tells us that “Iron sharpens Iron” and there are not many places that it works better than in a hunting or fishing camp or in a fishing boat.  We’ll hear how that plays out on today’s program.

God changes men’s hearts all the time and yet as Christians we often see someone that seems to have everything in place in their lives and we question if they could make a choice to follow Jesus.  Today’s guest seemed to have it all.  Great job, owner of a great company, freedom to do whatever he wanted to do.  Yet, he had a hole in his life.  Then one day, he heard about a man named Jesus, that allowed Himself to be hung on the cross just for him.Today, that same outdoorsman that seemed to have everything, left it all behind and went to work sharing the gospel at a Cowboy Church in the cattle country of South Texas.

If you were one of the top winning fisherman of all time as well as someone that was on national TV for several decades it might be easy to show a little pride in yourself.  However, today’s guest is just that fisherman… but you’ll see he is a humble man that gives the credit to God for all those things he’s been blessed with.Life has gotten so busy and noisy and you’ll hear about the necessity of slowing down, being still and resting on the Lord.  The generations of today rarely take the opportunity to be still, and it is something that we need to do.
