Secularism is the dominant philosophy of our culture today, and it is defined by the belief that each individual is the god of his own universe. But this philosophy, while a trademark of the 21st century, is by no means new. In Paul’s day Christians were becoming secularized in both their thinking and practice in much the same way that Christians are today. That’s why Paul pleads in Romans 12:2 for us not to be conformed to the world but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. He knew that if we were going to make a difference in the world, we would have to be different from it.
