Nothing to Take
by Berni Dymet
Mark 6:8 He ordered them to take nothing for their journey except a staff; no bread, no bag, no money in their belts.
Let's imagine for a moment that you're Jesus. You decide to send the twelve disciples out - two at a time, on a field trip. A short term mission to put into practice the stuff they've been learning.
Good decision. So you start planning the trip -right. Now, what do I need to organize? Accommodation...Transport. They'll need some money. I mean, you just can't send them out there without anything.
But look at how Jesus actually did it - He ordered them to take nothing for their journey except a staff - no bread, no bag and no money - not even a change of clothes. Why?
Sometimes we get to thinking of God being like some corporate executive - a strategic planner, a CEO, a consulting guru all wrapped up in one.
But that completely misses the point. His ways are so radically different to ours. I mean imagine - sending them out with nothing.
His ways aren't our ways. His thoughts aren't our thoughts.
