Drifting From the Truth
Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away.
Hebrews 2:1
Paul continued his argument proving that Christ was superior to angels; but, all of a sudden, he interrupted his train of thought to give a needed exhortation to be taken seriously by believers, even today.
Paul addressed the problem of Judaizers in the church. They had, at one time, come to Christ, but then they decided to go back to adhering to the Law. In doing so it had caused them to drift away from the truth of the Gospel message. As an expert teacher, Paul engaged them with the truth of the Scriptures.
Paul’s exhortation was a wake-up call––a strong warning. By expository teaching, he set an immovable foundation that Jesus Christ was greater than the angels. Jesus was even greater than Aaron, Moses or any of the Old Testament prophets. In Hebrews 3:3, Paul stated: For this One [Jesus] has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses....
On one occasion, Jesus spoke with the scribes and Pharisees about the prophet Jonah, and then he proclaimed: ...indeed a greater than Jonah is here (Matthew 12:41). Jesus went on to mention the Queen of Sheba, who came to see for herself the wisdom and greatness of Solomon. But standing before the Jewish leaders was someone far greater ...indeed a greater than Solomon is here (Matthew 12:42). What was Jesus revealing to them? He revealed that He was their Messiah.
On another day, Jesus spoke something so profound to the Pharisees who had accused His Disciples of breaking the Law on the Sabbath. They had plucked heads of grain to eat, which was considered work, and as such, they broke the pharisaical laws. Jesus reminded the Jews of David who entered the house of God and ate the showbread which was not lawful for him to eat.... Human need was greater than pharisaical laws. Jesus used the opportunity to reveal who He was to them: Yet I say to you that in this place there is One greater than the temple. The Jews worshiped in the Temple, but before them was the Messiah who was worthy of all their worship!
Depend on it, my hearer, you never will go to heaven unless you are prepared to worship Jesus as God.
