The Passover Lamb
And it shall be, when your children say to you, ‘What do you mean by this service?’ that you shall say, ‘It is the Passover sacrifice of the Lord, who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt when He struck the Egyptians and delivered our households.’ ” So the people bowed their heads and worshiped.
Exodus 12:26-27
There are three major Jewish holy days that are considered to be Pilgrim Festivals. The Feast of Passover, called Pesah in Hebrew, is “the Feast of Unleavened Bread.” The Feast of Pentecost, called Shavuot in Hebrew, is “the Feast of Weeks;” and the Feast of Tabernacles, called Sukkoth in Hebrew, is also known as the “Feast of Booths.” Interestingly, Jesus kept these Jewish feast days.
The first Passover is recorded in Exodus 12. The children of Israel were slaves for 400 years in Egypt. God sent a deliverer––Moses. Pharaoh was stubborn and would not let the children of Israel go. God sent 10 plagues upon the land of Egypt. The last plague would kill the firstborn in every family.
However, during the 14 of Nisan, they were to slaughter a lamb and use its blood to place on the lintel and doorposts. Then the angel of death would pass over that house. This was the final plague before Pharaoh released them. The Passover was to be observed every year in remembrance of God’s deliverance for His people.
During the Feast of Passover, people traveled from all over the world to worship God in Jerusalem. According to Josephus, the population of Jerusalem increased to more than two million.
If you are a Christian, then you have been through the Passover. How? You have been delivered out of Egypt––a type of this sinful world. The blood of Jesus has delivered you from the bondage of sin and death. John the Baptist declared: “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” You have been Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb––Jesus Christ. Now we begin our new journey of faith in Jesus Christ.
He will, he must, Pass over us, because he spared not our glorious Substitute.
