Jewish Holy Days
“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates.”
Exodus 20:8-10
Before we continue to expound on the Day of Pentecost, as a Christian it is beneficial to know the different Jewish holy days, the various feasts that the Jewish people solemnly kept and celebrated in serving their God.
Understand, Christians worship the same God as the Jews: ...the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob... (Exodus 3:15). God has not changed: “For I am the Lord, I change not...” (Malachi 3:6 KJV). Therefore, we need to understand biblical history and how we are to worship and serve our God today.
After God created the heavens and the earth, on the seventh day He rested from His work (Genesis 2:2-3). God commanded His people to have a day of rest, a Sabbath day. The word Sabbath means “rest.” Jews are not allowed to work on this holy day. The Sabbath, also known as the Shabbat, is a weekly feast. It begins on Friday at sunset, and lasts until Saturday at sunset. Jewish families prepare everything for the Sabbath ahead of time, as all the shops close early on Friday. During the Sabbath, they will not cook, use an elevator, or even walk for more than half a mile!
For Christians, the Sabbath day is every day. You can choose to go to church on Sunday, or if you work that day, on Wednesday or any other day. There is no bondage to a certain day. Consider Romans 14:5-6:
One person esteems one day above another; another esteems every day alike. Let each be fully convinced in his own mind. He who observes the day, observes it to the Lord; and he who does not observe the day, to the Lord he does not observe it....
Whatever day you choose to go to church, it not only becomes a day to worship and meditate about God, but it is a day of rest for your body.
“The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. Therefore the Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath.” ~Mark 2:27-28~
