Labor Day

Since the beginning of time in the Garden of Eden, the Bible revealed the consequences of what is commonly known as the “Fall of Mankind.” The seduction of the serpent caused our parents, Adam and Eve, to sin. The ground became cursed, and since then, work has become toil. A farmer’s work to make a living is very hard. Whatever job men do, they work hard to provide for their homes and families.
Labor Day is a federal holiday that is observed on the first Monday in September. It is a time of tribute to the many achievements of American workers, and it is often celebrated with city parades, family gatherings, and outdoor barbeques. The first Labor Day in history was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in agreement with the proposals of the Central Labor Union. Later, other states followed suit. Grover Cleveland, our 22nd and 24th President, signed into law that the first Monday in September should be a national holiday.
Labor Day has often been considered to be the unofficial end of summer. It is hard to believe that children have already started going back to school! Most summer vacations have ended, and people are beginning to focus on the upcoming holidays. Festive decorations for Thanksgiving and Christmas are already displayed in the stores. After our blistering hot summer, we hope the weather cools in fall, as we are supposed to be having a super El Niño year. The parched ground could do with the rain!
Before life becomes busy with preparations for the holidays, slow down and enjoy your Labor Day. Take time to rest and relax with your family. As you do, consider all the blessings God has given you and be grateful.
Moreover, when God gives someone wealth and possessions, and the ability to enjoy them, to accept their lot and be happy in their toil—this is a gift of God.
