An Unchanging God
And: “You, Lord, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of Your hands. They will perish, but You remain; and they will all grow old like a garment; like a cloak You will fold them up, and they will be changed. But You are the same, and Your years will not fail.”
Hebrews 1:10-12
Once again, we see, without a shadow of a doubt, that Jesus, our Lord, pre-existed in eternity before the earth was ever formed. He is Creator, and in the beginning, He laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens. Creation is the work of His hands.
The writer of Hebrews used Psalm 102:25-27 as evidence for Christ’s deity:
Of old You laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of Your hands. They will perish, but You will endure; yes, they will all grow old like a garment; like a cloak You will change them, and they will be changed. But You are the same, and Your years will have no end.
The identity of Jesus is established both in the Old Testament and in the New Testament. He is eternal, but the heavens and earth will pass away:
But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up (2 Peter 3:10).
God is unchanging. He remains the same forever: Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). Life is ever- changing, and that can be very unsettling at times, but we serve an unchanging God. He is the Person we can place our trust in.
Jesus, whose years do no fail––Creator God––will establish a new heaven, and a new earth for us. Amazing, amazing!
Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away.
