An Everlasting Throne

But to the Son He says: “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; a scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom. You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; therefore God, Your God, has anointed You with the oil of gladness more than Your companions.”
Hebrews 1:8-9

We have seen in the Scriptures that God created the angels, but Christ has always existed. The Son is seated on an eternal throne: Your throne, O God, is forever and ever.... Notice what the Father said to His Son––O God. This means that Jesus is God too!

The Jehovah's Witnesses and the Mormons have a hard time with this Scripture. They struggle with the thought of a Triune God. They believe Christians worship three different gods. But we worship one God in three Persons––God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit: For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, [Jesus] and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one (1 John 5:7).

The writer of the book of Hebrews is quoting from Psalm 45:6-7:

Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; a scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom. You love righteousness and hate wickedness; therefore God, Your God, has anointed You with the oil of gladness more than Your companions.

When Jesus’ Kingdom comes, He will be seated on the throne. In Psalm 45:6-7, we read about His majesty and rulership. Jesus loves righteousness and hates lawlessness. What are we seeing on the streets of many cities around the world? Lawlessness! Our current Administration is trying, as much as possible, to stop the violence in America’s cities.

In the Last Days, lawlessness will increase: “And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold” (Matthew 24:12). We should not lose heart––our King is coming! Kings were anointed with oil. God has anointed Jesus with the oil of gladness. This symbolically speaks of the Holy Spirit. Who are the companions? Christians––you and me.

Christ is our best friend, and ere long will be our only friend.
