Living Stones

Coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious....
1 Peter 2:4

In 1 Peter 2, you will continue to see how knowledgeable Peter was about the Word of God. Even though a humble fisherman, he had been with Jesus and knew the Old Testament Scriptures. In verse 4, Peter used the analogy of Jesus becoming a living stone, and in the following verse, we will see how He became the Cornerstone of the Church.

If you pick up a rock, you obviously know it is dead material––it is made up of minerals. But what I find amazing is that Peter revealed to us that Jesus is likened to a living stone! Listen, when we come to Christ as a Person––as to a living stone––He is able to give us eternal life.

Jesus was chosen, but by whom? He was chosen by God and precious. The word precious means “highly priced or rare.” He was not only chosen by God the Father, but valued by Him as precious. Why? Jesus is His Beloved Son! John 3:16 shows us how precious He is: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

Even though Jesus is our life-giver, both physically and spiritually, people continue to reject Him. There are men, human beings, who do not want anything to do with Christ––nothing! Unbelievably, they do not want salvation and reject His love, grace and mercy––sad.

To believers, Jesus is precious. Why? He is the only One who can save us! That is why He is so precious to us. He has brought us to a place of comfort and peace with God. He is the only One who can take us out of our darkness and bring us into His beautiful light. Our ears and eyes become open to hear what the Spirit is saying to us.

If you are unaware of the depth of these Scriptures, listen intently to Peter; he knows what he is talking about. Pay close attention and learn.

You will never find Jesus so precious as when the world is one vast howling wilderness. Then he is like a rose blooming in the midst of the desolation, a rock rising above the storm.
