Jesus, Worshiped by Angels
For to which of the angels did He ever say: “You are My Son, today I have begotten You”? And again: “I will be to Him a Father, and He shall be to Me a Son”? But when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says: “Let all the angels of God worship Him.” And of the angels He says: “Who makes His angels spirits and His ministers a flame of fire.”
Hebrews 1:5-7
In Hebrews 1:5-13, Paul the Apostle will give us seven Old Testament quotations to show Christ's superiority over angels. The Apostle Paul had an incredible comprehension of the Old Testament Scriptures. He could quote them from memory and expound on them expertly.
At this particular time, Paul was writing many of the books in the New Testament. In the book of Hebrews, it is astounding to see Paul’s knowledge of Christ’s supremacy and deity masterfully penned by him. He skillfully used the Scriptures to prove that Jesus is far better than the angels.
The first two quotations are from the Old Testament. The first is found in Psalm 2:7: “I will declare the decree: The Lord has said to Me, ‘You are My Son, today I have begotten You.’ ” The second is recorded in 2 Samuel 7:14. David and Solomon are seen as a foreshadowing of the relationship of God the Father and His Beloved Son, who will sit on the throne of David forever:
“When your [David’s] days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. He [Solomon] shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be his Father, and he shall be My son” (2 Samuel 7:12-14).
Nathan the prophet spoke to David, promising Him that one of his descendants would sit on his throne and establish an eternal kingdom. Who would that be? None other than Jesus Christ, the Messiah.
The deity of Christ is the key doctrine of the scriptures. Reject it, and the Bible becomes a jumble of words without any unifying theme. Accept it, and the Bible becomes an intelligible and ordered revelation of God in the person of Jesus Christ.
