A Defeated Foe
And again: “Here am I and the children whom God has given Me.”
Hebrews 2:13
Once again, Paul perfectly joins the Old Testament and the New Testament together. He quoted from Isaiah 8:18: Here am I and the children whom the Lord has given me! What a beautiful expression spoken by the prophet Isaiah of what Christ was going to do.
Historically, this psalm spoke of a future event when Assyria would attack Israel. Here is a synopsis of what happened. The city of Jerusalem was surrounded by a massive army of 185,000 men. King Hezekiah faced a crisis as the Assyrian king issued a threat. A scroll was thrown over the wall with a message that threatened, “By sundown, you and all your people in the city will be dead!”
King Hezekiah opened the scroll, spread it out before God, and prayed, “These are the Assyrians, and this is what they have said against You, that you cannot deliver us out of their hands!” God told Hezekiah, “Go to bed tonight, and get a good night's sleep. Do not even worry about it.”
In the morning, King Hezekiah woke up. The first thing he did was to look over the wall. To his surprise, he could not believe what he saw––185,000 Assyrians were all dead! During the night, one angel had come and killed them all! God, the great I Am, delivered His people (2 Kings 19).
Jesus, the great I Am, delivered us from Satan! He is a defeated foe! When Jesus was betrayed by Judas, Peter attempted to use his sword to defend the Lord, but Jesus told him to put away his sword. He said to His disciple: “Or do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He will provide Me with more than twelve legions of angels?” (Matthew 26:53). If one angel wiped out 185,000 Assyrians, what do you think 12 legions of angels could do? Jesus needed to go to the Cross. It was the only way to defeat Satan, so that we could become children of God!
It is unfathomable to me that we have the privilege to become children of God! With Satan and death defeated, Christ has given us eternal life.
On the back of Satan's neck is a nail scarred footprint.
