Search the Scriptures

Then the brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea. When they arrived, they went into the synagogue of the Jews. These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so.
Acts 17:10-11

Paul and Silas had escaped from Jason’s house, as a mob had gathered around the home to try to drag them outside and do them harm. Having escaped, the brethren decided to immediately send them by night to Berea. On their missionary journeys, it seemed they were always leaving places at night and making a run for their lives!

Berea was just a small city about 40 miles away from Thessalonica. Paul and Silas used the same strategy as, once again, on the Sabbath Day, they entered a synagogue and began to speak to the Jews gathered there, about Christ.

The Gospel is for everyone––for people living in affluent, capital cities and for those less significant people who live in smaller cities. God moves in all places; He is not prejudiced. When Paul and Silas preached to the people in Berea about Jesus Christ, there was one notable difference in their response. They diligently went back to the Scriptures and made sure what they told them was true. Was it in context? People in Berea became well-known for searching the Scriptures to find out the truth.

As Christians, it is important to follow their example. Study biblical doctrine to make sure you have the truth and have not been fed lies. Even what I teach from the pulpit should be examined to make sure it is true. Go back to the Scriptures to make sure.

There is an infinite majesty about every line of Scripture, but especially about that part of Scripture in which the Lord reveals Himself and His glorious plan of saving grace in the person of His dear Son Jesus Christ.
~Charles Spurgeon~
