The Gift of Living Water

Jesus answered her [the Samaritan woman], “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”
John 4:10 NIV

Most people want to receive all that God has for them. The Samaritan woman was no different. She wanted what Jesus was offering her––living water––but she lacked understanding. When Jesus lovingly encountered the Samaritan woman, her life was sinful; she was living in sin with a man who was not her husband.

Jesus came to save sinners. He knew the Samaritan woman needed to repent of her sin. If she would surrender her life to God, He would cleanse her of her sin and give her a wonderful gift. She would be filled with His Spirit: “Whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life” (John 4:14). Jesus spoke to her of the power of the Holy Spirit.

Although the Samaritan woman talked at ease about worship, she had no real relationship with God. Jesus told her that those who worship God must worship Him in Spirit and in truth (John 4:24). The literal translation for the word truth is “reality.” God had to be real in her life. When she was finally made to know that Jesus was indeed the Christ, her life was changed.

Notice, her empty water jar was left behind. The woman herself became an earthen vessel filled with living water! In the power of the Holy Spirit, she became a bold witness of Christ. With joy, she shared the good news with those living in the town: “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?” (John 4:29 NIV).

Like the Samaritan woman, are you living a life of sin? You may have knowledge about the Bible, but you have no real relationship with God. Jesus loves you, and He is pursuing you to give you His living water.

Being filled with the Spirit is simply this––having my whole nature yielded to His power, when the whole soul is yielded to the Holy Spirit, God Himself will fill it.
