The Forgiveness of Sin
He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.
Colossians 1:13-14
In the Old Testament, Israel had to offer daily sacrifices for sin, but it was only a covering for sin. We have since learned in Hebrews 10:4: ...it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins. However, when Jesus came and died on the Cross, His precious blood took away our sin once and for all: ... He [Jesus] has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself. ...so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many (Hebrews 9:26, 28). Knowing this, we should be filled with incredible joy.
We are all born in sin and have a sinful nature. The only way to forgive what is known as Adamic sin is by the blood of Christ: In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace... (Ephesians 1:7). Salvation is a gift from God. You cannot buy your way into heaven; neither can you rely on your religious upbringing. Jesus’ blood is the ransom price paid for your redemption:
...knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot (1 Peter 1:18-19).
As Christians, we sin daily, but as we come every day to repent and confess our sins to Christ, we are continually washed and cleansed from sin. First John 1:7, 9 tells us:
...if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
This does not mean we can take advantage of God’s grace. We cannot continue to live a life of willful sin (Romans 6:1-2). We are children of the light and must walk in obedience to God’s Word.
God has never promised to forgive a single sin that man is not willing to forsake.
