Are You Unaware of Drifting?

Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away.
Hebrews 2:1

Paul felt such an urgency to warn Jewish believers who were drawn back to the Law, not to lose faith in the Gospel. They had heard the truth. He warned them not to drift away from Christ. Today, this can be a problem. People can drift away from Christ slowly without realizing it.

God gave me a perfect lesson to show just how easy it can be to drift away. One Sunday afternoon I decided to go to Huntington Beach to surf for a couple of hours.  I arrived at Huntington, parked my pickup truck, got my surfboard, and went over to the lifeguard station. I gave one of the lifeguards my keys to hold onto while I went surfing.

After a couple of hours, I finally came back in from surfing and went over to the lifeguard and said, “Hey, can I have my keys back?” He looked at me kind of puzzled and said, “You never gave me your keys.” I thought, Oh no, something must have happened. I was concerned that my truck had been stolen, and how I was going to get back home.

I decided to find my truck. I walked one block, then two, and after walking three blocks, I suddenly saw my white pickup truck. It was parked right where I left it! Then I realized that while surfing, I had drifted far away from the lifeguard station where I had left my keys.” I had thought I was right, and the lifeguard was not telling me the truth, but I had drifted.

This can happen to believers when they think they are alright in their relationship with Jesus, but they are unaware of how much they have drifted away from Him. It can happen slowly, as they stop going to Wednesday services. Then on Sundays, they only go once a month. The weekend becomes busy with other things. Slowly, they drift away.

Life can get busy. On the weekend, you want to rest and relax, doing what you want, but your spiritual life is neglected. Take your relationship with God seriously. Going to church should be a priority. Do not drift away from the truth! Hearing the Word of God and knowing His voice is how you remain rooted and grounded in His love.

No short cuts exist for a deeper spiritual life. The man who would know God must give time to Him.
