The Feast of Pentecost

When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
Acts 2:1

There are great spiritual nuggets for us to understand in the Scriptures. One of them is the significance of Pentecost. It is the second of the three great Jewish feasts––Passover, Pentecost and Tabernacles.

The Feast of Pentecost, called Shavuot in Hebrew, is “the Feast of Weeks.” It was the time of the ingathering of the wheat harvest: “And you shall observe the Feast of Weeks, of the firstfruits of wheat harvest, and the Feast of Ingathering at the year’s end” (Exodus 34:22).

The word Pentecost in the Greek language is Pentekoste which means “fiftieth.” This Feast happens 50 days after the Passover Sabbath:

“ ‘And you shall count for yourselves from the day after the Sabbath, from the day that you brought the sheaf of the wave offering: seven Sabbaths shall be completed. Count fifty days to the day after the seventh Sabbath; then you shall offer a new grain offering to the Lord’ ” (Leviticus 23:15-16).

“You shall count seven weeks for yourself; begin to count the seven weeks from the time you begin to put the sickle to the grain. Then you shall keep the Feast of Weeks to the Lord your God with the tribute of a freewill offering from your hand, which you shall give as the Lord your God blesses you” (Deuteronomy 16:9-10).

In the New Testament, after the Feast of Passover, 40 days are counted in what is called the “Post Resurrection.” This is the time when Jesus had raised from the dead, walked, and ate with His disciples. Interestingly, the Holy Spirit came after another 10 days––on the Day of Pentecost, the fiftieth day––correlating with the “Feast of Weeks.”

As we know, on the Day of Pentecost, 120 followers of Christ received the baptism of the Holy Spirit. From that day forward, a great ingathering of souls began to happen, as both Jews and Gentiles received salvation.

Bethlehem was God with us. Calvary was God for us, and Pentecost is God in us.
