A Hope That Rests in God
He indeed was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you who through Him believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.
1 Peter 1:20-21
What does the Scripture mean when it speaks about Jesus being foreordained? You see, what Peter incredibly spoke about was the plan of salvation that was decided upon between the Trinity, even before the world ever existed. Sin entered the world when Satan tempted Eve to partake of the forbidden fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. After Eve ate the fruit, she gave it to Adam, and he ate it. Spiritual death happened immediately, and physical death happened slowly over time––day by day (Genesis 2:16-17; Genesis 3:1-6). But God had a plan, and it was referred to in Genesis 3:15:
“And I [God] will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; He [Jesus] shall bruise your head, and you [Satan] shall bruise His heel.”
Our salvation rests in God’s promise. In His mercy, He made a way for sinful man to be reconciled to Himself:
Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation, that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation (2 Corinthians 5:18-19).
Knowing and accepting God’s amazing plan of salvation, which was foreordained before the foundation of the world, means that we have also attained the ministry of reconciliation. We are called to take the message of the Gospel to others. We can show them the plan of salvation, as written in the Scriptures. We can give them hope––a hope that rests in God.
True faith rests upon the character of God and asks no further proof than the moral perfections of the One who cannot lie.
