A Promise of Rest
Therefore, since a promise remains of entering His rest, let us fear lest any of you seem to have come short of it.
Hebrews 4:1
As we move into Hebrews 4, the discourse continues on the theme of entering into God’s rest; however, the word rest is used in different ways. Here it is used as a day of rest ordained by the God of the Sabbath. Then it is explained as a rest for the children of Israel, as 40 years of wandering in the wilderness ended, and finally they entered the Promised Land––the Land of Canaan.
As Christians, we rest in the finished work of Jesus Christ. We rest in the victory He won on the Cross for our salvation. As we enter into His rest, we become overcomers. Through the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit, we can live victorious lives and win all our battles. We rest in the Lord’s work, knowing His sacrifice gained eternal life––heaven, for us.
If Jesus Christ had never died on the Cross, there would be no finished work––no rest. Sadly, our faith would be in vain because there would be no resurrection from the dead. Paul described our hopeless state if Christ had not died on the Cross and resurrected from the dead:
...if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, then your faith is useless and you are still guilty of your sins. In that case, all who have died believing in Christ are lost! And if our hope in Christ is only for this life, we are more to be pitied than anyone in the world (1 Corinthians 15:16-19 NLT).
Do you understand your hopeless state if Jesus had not gone to the Cross for your sin? Thank God, Jesus did go to the Cross! Now you can rest in His promises. 1 John 2:25 tells us: And this is the promise that He has promised us—eternal life. As believers, we walk by faith and trust in Jesus Christ for our eternal future.
Are you resting in God’s promises? Every Word of God is true.
From one end of the Bible to the other, God assures us that He will never go back on His promises.
