The Consequences of Rebellion
For who, having heard, rebelled? Indeed, was it not all who came out of Egypt, led by Moses? Now with whom was He angry forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose corpses fell in the wilderness? And to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who did not obey? So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.
Hebrews 3:16-19
Paul the Apostle took the Hebrews back to the days of Israel’s rebellion. They had been miraculously delivered from the Egyptians. They witnessed the ten plagues and the opening of the Red Sea so they could walk on dry ground. God provided for them. They were thirsty and weary, so He provided water from the Rock! When they murmured and complained, God provided manna for them to eat. They sinned greatly; in their hearts were rebellion and unbelief.
Israel rebelled against Moses in the wilderness. As a result, all except two faithful men, Caleb and Joshua, and those below the age of twenty died in the wilderness, all because of their unbelief and disobedience. God judged them for forty years––the number of judgment. Sadly, they never entered the Promised Land. The people were without excuse. What had they heard from Moses? They heard the Word of God––the Ten Commandments––given to them by Moses, along with laws regarding the tabernacle, worship, festivals, and their moral behavior.
However, Joshua and Caleb never provoked God to anger. They were men of faith, and God allowed them to go into the Promised Land. Caleb was 85 years old and still battle ready. In Joshua 14:10-12, Caleb asked Joshua to allow him to fight for a mountain inhabited by giants:
“...here I [Caleb] am this day, eighty-five years old. As yet I am as strong this day as on the day that Moses sent me; just as my strength was then, so now is my strength for war.... Now therefore, give me this mountain of which the Lord spoke in that day...”
Are you wandering around in the wilderness because of your disobedience? Through repentance, God’s blessings will return. There is still opportunity to get back into to the fight!
Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life,
to which you were also called....
