The Watchful Eyes of God
“For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and His ears are open to their prayers; but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”
1 Peter 3:12
The Lord is described in human terms as having eyes, ears and a face, but in actuality, God is Spirit––invisible––as stated in 1 Timothy 1:17: Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen. Remember, God is omniscient––all knowing. He is omnipotent––all powerful, and He is omnipresent––all present. So in this respect, God sees and hears all things: The eyes of the Lord are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good (Proverbs 15:3).
Another interesting Bible verse is found in 2 Chronicles 16:9: For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him. Yet another Bible verse reflects the same theme: “For His eyes are on the ways of man, and He sees all his steps” (Job 34:21).
For the righteous, a pleasant thought is to consider how God lovingly watches over their lives, but not so for the wicked. They try to hide what they do in the darkness, but God always sees them: Indeed, the darkness shall not hide from You, but the night shines as the day; the darkness and the light are both alike to You (Psalm 139:12).
We are born unaware of God’s gaze, but when we are born again of His Spirit, we become aware of His presence and watchfulness. We also have the privilege of prayer. God hears our prayers, because, through Jesus Christ, we are made righteous: But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God—and righteousness and sanctification and redemption— (1 Corinthians 1:30). The Lord’s face is against the wicked, and He will not answer their prayers. God is a just judge, and God is angry with the wicked every day (Psalm 7:11).
Are you aware of God’s watchfulness? Your life is under His gaze. How does this truth affect the way you are living your life?
When the eyes of the soul looking out meet the eyes of God looking in, heaven has begun right here on this earth.
