Pursuing Peace

“Let him turn away from evil and do good; let him seek peace and pursue it.”
1 Peter 3:11

Peter was once again referring back to Psalm 34. Those who desire a good life and to see good days are told to do what? It is simple, really–– turn away from evil and seek peace. Why not pursue a peaceful life? When Jesus taught the Sermon on the Mount to His followers, He taught them how to practically live the Christian life. One precept was to help bring about peace in difficult situations: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God” (Matthew 5:9). When we become peacemakers, we are exhibiting a Christ-like character. Peacemaking also identifies us as a true son or daughter of God.

It is easy to make peace with those who love us, but what about making peace with our enemies? We need to do that. The only way to do that is through the power of the Holy Spirit: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness... (Galatians 5:22). Our righteous actions are the foundation of peacemaking: Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace (James 3:18). Stay calm and be a peacemaker. Ask the Lord, in whatever adverse place you find yourself, to help you sow peace.

Also notice how James 3:13 gives you the right way to be a peacemaker: Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by good conduct that his works are done in the meekness of wisdom. Humility in peacemaking is a must, or it will not be well received.

The opposite of being a peacemaker is to always cause trouble. Listen, if you are going to look for trouble, you will be sure to find it. Why not seek peace instead? However, when you see a crime being committed, do not intervene and try to make peace; call a peace officer! Why? A police officer can negotiate or he has the legal authority to make an arrest.

You see, the psalmist knew exactly what he was talking about.

To be peacemaker, you must know the peace giver.
