A Biblical Explanation
“But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: ‘And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, that I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your young men shall see visions, your old men shall dream dreams.’ ”
Acts 2:16-17
The power of the Holy Spirit came upon Peter; he was emboldened to speak to his countrymen––the Jews. He did not give them an explanation of what happened on the Day of Pentecost from his own terminology; he gave a biblical account from the book of Joel. They could understand that God’s Spirit had been poured out, and that was why they could hear the disciples of Christ speaking in their dialects.
Joel was one of the Minor Prophets. In Joel 2:28-32, the penmanship of the prophet foretold exactly what would happen in the Last Days:
“And it shall come to pass afterward that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions. And also on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days. And I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth: blood and fire and pillars of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord. And it shall come to pass that whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. For in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be deliverance, as the Lord has said, among the remnant whom the Lord calls.”
The prophecy spoken is twofold. This promise of the Holy Spirit is not just for the apostles, it is for our children’s children, until the Lord returns: “For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call” (Acts 2:39).
I believe there will be another spiritual revival before the great and terrible day of the Lord happens which is when God will judge those who rejected Christ and a day when the inheritance of salvation is given to a believer. It is also the end of earth’s history as we know it.
He whose throne is built on justice and righteousness will see that righteousness prevails. That is why sin must, and will, be punished.
