Heroes of Faith
And what more shall I say? For the time would fail me to tell of Gideon and Barak and Samson and Jephthah, also of David and Samuel and the prophets: who through faith subdued kingdoms, worked righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, became valiant in battle, turned to flight the armies of the aliens.
Hebrews 11:32-34
Do you know the biblical stories of these heroes of faith? Have you read about their great victories? These chosen men have become tremendous role models for us. Even though they had their faults and weaknesses, God used them to do great exploits.
Gideon was a humble man who believed himself least among the tribes of Israel, but God chose to use his life for a great purpose. With only three hundred men, by faith, he defeated the Midinaites––an army as numerous as locusts (Judges 7). Barak was a man of war. With the encouragement and presence of Deborah, Israel’s judge and prophetess, he defeated King Jabin and his captain Sisera. God Himself intervened on Israel’s behalf (Judges 4-5).
David, the well-known hero of Israel, by faith and godly zeal, killed the Philistine giant Goliath. He was only a youth, a shepherd boy, but with a sling and a stone he defeated the giant: Then David put his hand in his bag and took out a stone; and he slung it and struck the Philistine in his forehead, so that the stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the earth (1 Samuel 17). Daniel was a dynamic hero of faith. When men plotted against him, he was placed in a lion’s den; miraculously the lions’ mouths were shut, and he remained unharmed (Daniel 6). These saints of old trusted in God by faith. If you have been encouraged by these heroes of faith, then pray and go do great exploits in the name of your God!
