Christian Progression
Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, of the doctrine of baptisms, of laying on of hands, of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. And this we will do if God permits.
Hebrews 6:1-3
Paul gave a list of progression––leaving the elementary principles of Christ to go on to perfection––literally to maturity. Notice, as Christians we are to move beyond the six things mentioned: the foundations of repentance from dead works, faith toward God, the doctrine of baptisms, laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. These are six things we learned early in our Christian infancy.
There are believers who have not gone beyond those six things, and there is no spiritual growth. They are not developing in Jesus Christ. It is as if they do not know their alphabet and are still learning their ABCs. They cannot yet write full sentences to complete a paragraph on paper. Sadly, they remain illiterate when it comes to understanding the things of God.
One beautiful thing about Calvary Chapel ministries is that they are known for their method of teaching. They teach from Genesis through Revelation––line upon line, precept upon precept. Once the entire Bible is taught, they will start all over again, beginning with Genesis. This way the congregation is well taught. Then it is the responsibility of the believer to go home and continue to read, pray and apply what God’s Word has spoken to them. There has to be change in the life of the believer. The Apostle Peter outlined another good progression of faith:
But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ (2 Peter 1:5-8).
If our faith is to grow we must maintain constant communication with God.
