Are You Growing in Christ?

For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
Hebrews 5:13-14

Paul continued his warning to the Jews from Hebrews 5 into Hebrews 6. He reasoned with them because they were choosing to depart from faith in Christ to embrace legalistic, Jewish, ceremonial laws. It was unfortunate that sincere believers in the church were now in danger of being drawn away to adhere to these laws, when Christ had set them free.

Even in churches today, believers can argue over doctrine and fall away from the faith over their marked differences. People can become very uptight and angry to the point that they refuse to talk to each other, and they break fellowship with one another. May we be open to the Holy Spirit and what He has to teach us through the Scriptures. We need to fully understand what the Bible teaches.

I love the way Paul presented his case by masterfully using the Scriptures to educate his Jewish brethren. He showed them their immaturity. They were unskilled and only able to take in the milk of the Word––they remained babes in Christ. They could not handle solid food––the depths of spiritual truths found in the Scriptures––because that was only for those who were of full age––mature.

These Jewish converts should not have been so easily persuaded away from their faith in Christ. If only they had matured, and if, by reason of use [had] their senses exercised to discern both good and evil, they should have easily spotted the deception of Judaizers who were trying to draw them back into Judaism.

Although you may be born again, it will require time to become a full-grown Christian. Justification is instantaneous, but sanctification is a lifework. We are to grow in wisdom. We are to add grace to grace. A tree may be perfect in its first year of growth, but it has not attained its maturity. So with the Christian: he may be a true child of God, but not a matured Christian.
