Are You Dull of Hearing?

...since you have become dull of hearing.
Hebrews 5:11

Paul taught the Jews very weighty subjects from the Scriptures. He explained that Jesus did not come from Aaron’s Levitical order of priests. Their Messiah was of the order of Melchizedek––the mysterious priest of the Most High God who sat and communed with Abraham in Genesis 14:18-20. Paul wanted to expound even more about the Scriptures to them, as he had more he could say, but instead, he pointed out the big hindrance in their lives––they had become dull of hearing.

I find this same issue has become such a problem among so many people in the church. Week after week, the Scriptures are taught to those attending the services. Sometimes weightier subjects are covered, as the Bible is taught, line upon line, from Genesis through Revelation. These are important doctrines covered that every believer should know and understand, such as: justification, sanctification, and glorification.

Still, people remain ignorant of the deeper things of God. They lack understanding because they do not take the time to study God’s Word on their own. It is the Spirit of God who reveals the depth of God’s Word to them as they sit and study:

But as it is written: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God (1 Corinthians 2:9-11).

What is causing you to neglect reading your Bible? What distractions are pulling you away from the priority of reading God’s Word? Be fully committed to reading your Bible, daily. Develop the discipline of having a devotional time with the Lord, then you will grow and mature. You will understand the deeper things of God. Be excited to hear God’s voice.

If you have trouble hearing God speak, you are in trouble at the very heart of your Christian experience.
