Things Hard to Explain

And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him, called by God as High Priest “according to the order of Melchizedek,” of whom we have much to say, and hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing.
Hebrews 5:9-11

Jesus, through His death on the Cross, became the author of salvation. The word author means “that in which the cause of anything resides. The Vine’s Dictionary gives a perfect explanation to help us understand the depth of what the Apostle Paul is teaching:

It signifies that Christ, exalted and glorified as our High Priest, on the ground of His finished work on earth, has become the personal mediating cause of eternal salvation. Christ is not the merely formal cause of our salvation. He is the concrete and active cause of it. He has not merely caused or effected it, He is, as His name, “Jesus” implies, our salvation itself (Luke 2:30).

Did you notice our responsibility? Salvation is given to all who obey Him. How can you call Jesus your Lord if you are not walking in obedience to Him? Listen to what Jesus said to one of His disciples in John 14:23:

“If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.”

Something else to notice is that Jesus was called by God to be our High Priest. Once again, Jesus was predetermined to become High Priest according to the order of Melchizedek (Genesis 14:18), not the Levitical order that began with Aaron, Moses’ brother (Exodus 28:1). For the Jews who were being drawn away back into Judaism, Paul combined the Old Testament Scriptures with the New Testament to explain such hard things––Jesus as High Priest through the priestly order of Melchizedek.

What was the reason given for the Jews’ lack of understanding? They had become dull of hearing. They lacked spiritual growth. The word dull means “slow” or “sluggish––lazy or even stupid.” It speaks of one who comprehends with difficulty. Are you dull of hearing? Read the Scriptures, ask God for understanding, and grow in the Lord.

People can't see your root system, but God can. Praying and meditating on the Word of God will cause your roots to go down deep into His love.
