Our Priest Forever

So also Christ did not glorify Himself to become High Priest, but it was He who said to Him: “You are My Son, today I have begotten You.” As He also says in another place: “You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek”...
Hebrews 5:5-6

Paul the Apostle made it crystal clear to believers that Jesus Christ was their High Priest. It was something they should not forget. They had an Advocate. They would never need to feel forsaken or abandoned––alone.

Again, Jesus did not come from Aaron’s Levitical order of priests. He was of the order of Melchizedek. Abraham, after a battle with four kings, sat down and met with Melchizedek: Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was the priest of God Most High (Genesis 14:18). What else is known about this mysterious priest? In Hebrews 7:1-3, we find an incredible description of him:

For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him, to whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all, first being translated “king of righteousness,” and then also king of Salem, meaning “king of peace” without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of God, remains a priest continually.

Due to this description, some believe this is a preincarnate appearance of Christ in the Old Testament. This may be so. If not, since there is no record of Melchizedek’s birth, he is a perfect type of Christ. Jesus is called Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6), and His rulership as a King of Righteousness is mentioned in Isaiah 32:1.

Way back in the book of Genesis, even before there was a Levitical priesthood, God established a superior priesthood. Jesus’ priesthood is after the order of Melchizedek: The Lord has sworn and will not relent, “You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek” (Psalm 110:4). The Scriptures unveil a High Priest forever in the Person of Christ. Beautiful.

But He [Jesus], because He continues forever,
has an unchangeable priesthood.
