A Wasted Life
For we have spent enough of our past lifetime in doing the will of the Gentiles—when we walked in lewdness, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and abominable idolatries.
1 Peter 4:3
Peter referenced the Gentiles and the way they were known to live their lives. Historically, the Jews were a people separated to the Lord, and they never associated with the Gentiles. The Gentiles wasted their lives in all kinds of evil vices; they were a very immoral and idolatrous people. Addressing believers in Christ, Peter wanted them, and even himself, to view their past lives as wasted time spent––in lewdness, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and abominable idolatries. They lived doing the will of the Gentiles, but now they must live their lives doing the will of God.
Sadly, as sinners, in our past lifetime, we have wasted years doing many of those same things. We may have spent 10, 20, 30, 40 or 50 years drinking, taking drugs, and attending wild parties. We may have lived completely immoral lives without any moral restraint. Lust is a strong human desire, and when exerted, it becomes a strong influence over one's behavior. Lust can ruin your marriage and your good character.
People believe they are out having fun. Really? Is throwing up and feeling very sick in the morning enjoyable? There are people who have no idea what they did while under the influence of drugs and alcohol. They do really stupid things and make dumb decisions because they are no longer sober minded. All these things are destroying people’s lives. Sin may be fun for a season, but there is always a price to pay.
Christians are no longer to waste their lives in worldly living. We are to be ashamed of those things we used to do and never boast about our sinful experiences. God desires our consecration and holiness. Consider this: We are given joy and peace that this world can never give us. We are no longer in the darkness, but in the light. So why not walk in the light? Then you will have a strong testimony seen by your friends and family. When they see your genuine faith, they too, will be led to Christ.
How you live your life is a testimony of what you believe about God.
