Our Sympathetic Savior
For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.
Hebrews 4:15
As our High Priest, Jesus sympathizes with our weaknesses, which means He completely understands us. He is aware of our human frailties and how we are susceptible to temptation. How is it possible that Jesus relates to us? Jesus was 100% human and 100% God––One Person with two natures. Hebrews 2:17-18 explains how He identifies with us:
Therefore, in all things He had to be made like His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. For in that He Himself has suffered, being tempted, He is able to aid those who are tempted.
Jesus Christ was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. He went through greater temptations than you and I could ever experience in our lifetime, and yet He came through them (Matthew 4). When we go through temptations and testings in our lives, we can pray to God, and He will give us His grace to see us through: Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need (Hebrews 4:16). We have divine resources at our disposal. When we are tempted, God will help us to find a way of escape. First Corinthians 10:13 shows His faithfulness:
No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.
Are you in a season of trial or temptation? God understands and is there to help you. He will calm the storm for believers in a deep season of trial or sorrow. He will faithfully give a way of escape to Christians who are tempted to sin. Do not try to overcome any of these things by yourself. You need your High Priest, the One in the heavens, to help you.
Immanuel, God with us in our nature, in our sorrow, in our lifework, in our punishment, in our grave, and now with us, or rather we with Him, in resurrection, ascension, triumph, and Second Advent splendor.
