What Not To Do!
Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience.
Hebrews 4:11
Do you hear the urgency in Paul’s voice to enter that rest? What rest was the writer of Hebrews speaking about? It was the rest Christ made for them when He secured their salvation. They could not do anything to secure their salvation. Jesus did it all! All they had to do was enter that rest by faith.
Paul exhorted those listening to his teaching to be diligent or literally “to move quickly” and not to procrastinate their decision to enter that rest Christ made for them. He urged them, “Do not wait or hesitate––do it now.”
The Jews were tempted to fall away from Christ into a work mode of thinking. They needed to learn from the disastrous disobedience of their predecessors. Look at Israel and what happened to them because of their unbelief and disobedience. Did they really want to follow their example?
Are you struggling with trusting God, obeying Him, and resting in His promises? Believers can fall away from God because of discouragement and unbelief––they can grow bitter. There is a real danger of going back into the world. How foolish! Once you have tasted the goodness of God, you will never be the same, because the Holy Spirit has touched your life.
In a time of discouragement, what kept the psalmist rejoicing?
Our soul waits for the Lord; He is our help and our shield. For our heart shall rejoice in Him, because we have trusted in His holy name. Let Your mercy, O Lord, be upon us, just as we hope in You (Psalm 33:20-22).
Instead of being miserable, sour faced, depressed and oppressed, ask God to fill you with His hope and joy. There is joy in obedience. The joy of the Lord will strengthen you in times of discouragement. Take heart! Everything God is allowing in your life is working out for your good.
Obedience to the will of God is the pathway to perpetual honor and everlasting joy.
