The Finished Work of God

For He has spoken in a certain place of the seventh day in this way: “And God rested on the seventh day from all His works”; and again in this place: “They shall not enter My rest.”
Hebrews 4:4-5

God spoke creation into being over a period of six days. When God finished His creation, what did He do? On the seventh day He rested. God was not tired, but He rested to make the seventh day, a day of rest for us! People work six days, and on the seventh day, they need to rest physically. We need a day of rest for our bodies so that we can continue to survive another week, another month, another year. God knew what He was doing when He created a day of rest.

In the same way, spiritually we are able to enter into rest because of the finished work of Jesus Christ on the Cross. Just as God finished the work of creation and rested on the seventh day, making a rest day for us, Jesus also made a way for us to rest by finishing the work of our redemption. Jesus said: “It is finished!” (John 19:30). He was victorious over sin and death, and now we just have to enter the rest He has created for us.

In the previous verse, we are told: ...although the works were finished from the foundation of the world (Hebrews 4:3). You may ask me, “You mean to say that before the world existed, God had a preordained plan to save us?” Yes, He loved us that much: ....just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love... (Ephesians 1:4).

From before the very foundation of the world, the Gospel message preexisted. The plan was decided in eternity for Jesus to be born of a virgin. At the age of 33, He would be crucified, and on the third day, He would rise again. He is now seated at the right hand of the Father.

Have you entered into the rest Christ has made for you? Say a prayer of repentance and, by faith, receive Him, and all your sins will be forgiven.

If you rest on the finished work of Jesus you have already the best evidence of your salvation in the world; you have God’s Word for it; what more is needed?
