Bible School

And he [Paul] went into the synagogue and spoke boldly for three months, reasoning and persuading concerning the things of the kingdom of God. But when some were hardened and did not believe, but spoke evil of the Way before the multitude, he departed from them and withdrew the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus. And this continued for two years, so that all who dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks.
Acts 19:8-10

Paul had made disciples in Ephesus. He continued to teach the Word in the synagogue for a period of three months. Paul’s method of teaching was just like Calvary Chapel’s––line upon line. He wanted his Jewish brethren to understand the message of the Gospel, so he made the Word of God easy to understand, as he reasoned with them. Paul was an intellectual person––an incredible theologian––but he taught the Word in simplicity so his listeners could easily learn about the Kingdom of God.

Some of the Jews resisted, having hardened hearts. They spoke evil of the Way––Christianity. They were not receptive and rejected the Gospel. Paul decided to go in a different direction. Instead of teaching in the synagogue, he took those who had become disciples and taught them in the school of Tyrannus. A school named after a philosopher. Paul may have rented this lecture hall from 11:00 to 4:00pm. Imagine, he started a Bible School, teaching theology for two years.

A problem in some churches today is the lack of teaching God’s Word. They substitute sound teaching for entertainment––theatre and arts. Maybe only 15 minutes is left to teach the Scriptures in the service. You cannot learn God’s Word like that.

That is why, here at Calvary Chapel, we put the emphasis on teaching you the entire Bible, line upon line, precept upon precept. That way you receive the whole counsel of God for your life. It is important to know God both in the Old Testament and the New Testament. You need a balance.

An excellent way to deepen your relationship with God, as you study the Bible in depth, is attend Bible School.

A thorough knowledge of the Bible is worth
more than a college education.
