An Anchor for Our Souls
This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the veil....
Hebrews 6:19
Our hope in Christ becomes an anchor to our soul. When our hope is placed solely on Jesus Christ, we are immovable in our faith. We are not tossed to and fro by the storms of this life. Our security is in Jesus Christ. He is our hope for life in eternity.
Christ is revealed in the Scriptures as the logos. The Bible uses logos in reference to Jesus as the Word, as written in John 1:1-2: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. In John 1:14 we read: And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.... Jesus took on our human limitations without surrendering any of His divine attributes. He was veiled in flesh––in humanity. All His spoken words are anchored in truth.
The Bible is described as God’s living Word (Hebrews 4:12). It also becomes an anchor for our souls. As it is impossible for God to lie, we can be sure that whatever He promised in His Word will be kept. We have a steadfast hope, because God revealed in His Word that we can have life through belief in His Son: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).
What does the phrase “the Presence behind the veil” mean? In the Tabernacle where the Jews worshiped, a 4-inch-thick veil separated the people and priests from the Holy of Holies. This is where the Ark of the Covenant was placed. Only the High Priest could enter there once a year on the day of Yom Kippur, also known as the Day of Atonement.
When Jesus was crucified on the Cross, at the moment of His death the veil in the Temple was torn from top to bottom. The way became open for sinners to enter into God’s throne room to ask forgiveness for their sins: Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh... (Hebrews 10:19-20). Jesus is our anchor of hope!
Hope is like an anchor. Our hope in Christ stabilizes us in the storms of life, but unlike an anchor, it does not hold us back.
