Our Strong Consolation

Thus God, determining to show more abundantly to the heirs of promise the immutability of His counsel, confirmed it by an oath, that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we might have strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us.
Hebrews 6:17-18

In these verses we come to understand the immutability of God’s character and His counsel. His Word is confirmed by an oath. When God makes a promise, He will not go back on it. He keeps His promises. God’s Word is sure, and whatever He says, He will do. His character is unchanging. How beautiful is this!

There are two immutable things about God that you and I can count on. The first is that God does not lie, and the second is His unchanging character. God has given us a strong consolation by giving us a refuge in His Son.

When a sinner runs to Jesus for refuge, they can rely on the One who will keep them safe. They are completely protected. They will not be judged for their sins; their sins will be forgiven. Satan no longer has a hold of their life. Jesus’ death on the Cross has won the victory for our salvation. Colossians 1:13-14 describes the refuge we have when we come to salvation in Christ Jesus:

He [Jesus] has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.

As a believer remains in Christ, the enemy cannot touch them. There are times when God allows trials and testings, as in the case of Job (Job 1:6-22). Yet what strong consolation did Job have while enduring trials and testings? He said, “For I know that my Redeemer lives...”  (Job 19:25). Jesus lives! And because He lives, we shall also live forever with Him. Our strong consolation is to lay hold of the hope of eternal life!

In Jesus Christ on the Cross, there is refuge; there is safety; there is shelter; and all the power of sin upon our track cannot reach us when we have taken shelter under the Cross that atones for our sins.
