Where Is Your Treasure?

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Matthew 6:21

Have you ever considered this question, “Where is your treasure?” Jesus reveals to us that depending on where your treasure is, that is where your heart will be. If your treasure is anchored to the things in the world, you will only have disappointment. Why? Jesus tells us: “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal...” (Matthew 6:19).

Jesus taught us eternal values, to lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal (Matthew 6:20). Earthly treasures are fleeting––they can be stolen or destroyed. Besides, no earthly treasure can be taken to heaven when you die. It is important to have an eternal perspective with your wealth. Be a good steward of what God has blessed you with, but do not have a false security in them. Riches are like sand––unstable. Our economy has no security at all.

In this life the things of the Spirit are more important––not silver, gold or brass. Take to heart the exhortation found in Colossians 3:2-4:

Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.

So many people are concerned with their outward appearance. The Word of God tells us not to worry about our earthly bodies because even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day (2 Corinthians 4:16). Even though we are going to grow older, the inward man is enjoying our preparation for heaven daily. One day we shall be in glory with Christ!

Make sure your outlook on life has an eternal perspective.

Laying up treasures in heaven will draw the heart heavenward.
