Obtaining the Promises of God
And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise. For men indeed swear by the greater, and an oath for confirmation is for them an end of all dispute.
Hebrews 6:15-16
Abraham obtained the promise God gave to him. Why? He did not waver in his faith. He endured testing and never doubted God. The book of Hebrews attests to Abraham’s dedicated faith:
By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, of whom it was said, “In Isaac your seed shall be called,” concluding that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead, from which he also received him in a figurative sense (Hebrews 11:17-19).
The same chapter also attests to the faith of his wife Sarah:
By faith Sarah herself also received strength to conceive seed, and she bore a child when she was past the age, because she judged Him faithful who had promised. Therefore from one man, and him as good as dead, were born as many as the stars of the sky in multitude—innumerable as the sand which is by the seashore (Hebrews 11:11-12).
Jesus would come through the seed of Abraham––through Isaac, Jacob, and so on, to Judah, to King David––all the way through this bloodline to Joseph the husband of Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ (Matthew 1).
In John 3:16-17, God promised us salvation through His beloved Son:
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.”
Imagine, God called Abraham, who was at first an idolater, and chose to fulfill His promises through him, which, in turn, led to the birth of our Savior, the Jews’ Messiah. God’s Word is indisputable––sure.
But the Scripture has confined all under sin, that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.
