The Testing of Faith

Now it came to pass after these things that God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” Then He said, “Take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.”
Genesis 22:1-2

Abraham’s faith was greatly tested. He held to the promise that through Isacc––a son of promise––he would become a father of many nations. But now God had called upon him to take his son and offer him as a sacrifice. This was the first time in the Bible that God had ever asked for a human sacrifice.

Abraham, with knife in hand, obediently took two of his servants and his son Isaac, who carried the wood for the sacrifice. They went on a three-day journey to Mount Moriah. Seeing the place in the distance, Abraham told his servants to stay by the donkey while he and his son went to worship, and that they would come back (Genesis 22:5).

At the top of the Mount, Isaac asked a very important question: “Look, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” (Genesis 22:7). Even more intriguing was Abraham’s reply: “My son, God will provide for Himself the lamb for a burnt offering” (verse 8). Isaac was a grown man, but trustingly, he submitted himself to the will of his father.

Just at the point where Abraham lifted his knife to kill his son, the Angel of Lord intervened, saying: “Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me” (Genesis 22:12). Then in the thicket, a ram was seen caught by its horns. Abraham took the ram and offered it as a sacrifice instead of his son (Genesis 22:13).

This story is a picture of what would happen on Mount Moriah 2000 years later when Jesus submitted Himself to the will of His Father and died for us. God’s only Son, would become the Lamb of God––a sacrifice for our sins. Interestingly, Abraham was a type of God the Father, and Isaac was a type of Christ, God’s Son, and the wood was a type of the Cross.

The-Lord-Will-Provide; as it is said to this day, “In the Mount of the Lord it shall be provided.”
