The Blessings of God

For when God made a promise to Abraham, because He could swear by no one greater, He swore by Himself, saying, “Surely blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply you.”
Hebrews 6:13-14

Abraham was called by God to be the Father of a nation––Israel. God gave him tremendous promises:

“I will make you a great nation; I will bless you and make your name great; and you shall be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed” (Genesis 12:2-3).

What does it mean when God swore by Himself because there was none greater? God proclaimed that there is no one greater than Him. The fact is God always keeps His promises. The Bible records: “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness” (Romans 4:3).

There was a time of patiently waiting before the promise God made to Abraham came to pass. Sarah, Abraham’s wife, became impatient about God’s timing and took matters into her own hands. That was not good. In this time of history, according to custom, Abraham went along with his wife’s suggestion to intimately lay with her Egyptian maid, Hagar: So Hagar bore Abram a son; and Abram named his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael (Genesis 16:15). From this son, the Arab nations were birthed, and they became a thorn in the side of Israel, even to this very day!

Sarah became old and past the age of childbearing. It seemed that God’s promise would not be fulfilled. But God was true to His Word:

For Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him. And Abraham called the name of his son who was born to him—whom Sarah bore to him—Isaac (Genesis 21:2-3).

What promises has God given to you? Know He will be true to His Word. His promises will happen in His perfect timing.

For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God....
