The Right Heart Attitude In Giving
Nevertheless you have done well that you shared in my distress. Now you Philippians know also that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church shared with me concerning giving and receiving but you only. For even in Thessalonica you sent aid once and again for my necessities.
Philippians 4:14-16
In our overview of the book of Philippians, we shall also see the grateful heart of Paul as he wrote to the Philippian believers to thank them for their generous offerings. Paul never begged for money, but the Philippian church made up of Gentile believers willingly supported the Jewish believers in the church in Jerusalem. Notice, it was not a matter of the rich giving to the poor, but it was the very poor at Philippi who gathered together to collect an offering. They sincerely wanted to give to the needs of the believers in Jerusalem.
Even though the Philippians were very poor, they always gave as much as they could from what they had. Paul knew they had the right heart attitude in giving. Giving gave them joy. The Philippians were also sensitive toward Paul’s own personal needs. They joined together to give him an offering as well. This offering was sacrificial––an offering of love. Paul saw their genuine heart in giving and wrote to thank them. He was so blessed by their offerings.
It is easy to give to God out of abundance, when you already have so much. Yet giving sacrificially to God when you do not possess very much is very hard. The test of true giving will happen when you do not have your car payment or house payment, and yet you still faithfully give to God your tithes. God will honor it. He promises to provide for your needs. Seriously, God is not broke. God is rich in mercy, grace, love and in finances. Consider this––He possesses the entire universe!
Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the LORD Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.
