Essential Humility and Unity
Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the mutilation! For we are the circumcision, who worship God in the Spirit, rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh, though I also might have confidence in the flesh. If anyone else thinks he may have confidence in the flesh...
Philippians 3:2-3
In the book of Philippians there were imminent dangers in the church because of quarrels and dissentions. This was not the fault of church members, but Judaizers who tried to influence believers, as in the book of Galatians, teaching them that beside the grace of God, they needed works and circumcision to be saved. Paul in his letter, sought to straighten out this false belief. In doing so, we really begin to see the hand of God upon the Gentiles.
Paul also wrote about the main subject of the book of Philippians––Christ. He placed a clear picture of Jesus as our life, our example, our goal and our strength. Christ Jesus is to be all these things to us.
Paul exhorted the Philippians about following Christ’s example of humility. He commended Timothy and Epaphroditus to the Philippian church because they were two prominent leaders who set good examples of humility and unity in the Church. He said of Timothy:
But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you shortly, that I also may be encouraged when I know your state. For I have no one like-minded, who will sincerely care for your state. For all seek their own, not the things which are of Christ Jesus. But you know his proven character, that as a son with his father he served with me in the gospel (Philippians 2:19-22).
There is no place for pride when serving the Lord. We are to serve in humility. If we follow Christ’s example of humility we shall be like-minded. What was the mind of Christ? It was to serve. Do you serve the body of Christ or do you like to be served?
“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
~Mark 10:45~
