The Wonderful Names of Christ

For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 9:6

Jesus is the name which is above every name; and at His name every knee shall bow (Philippians 2:9-10)About 700 years before Christ was born, Isaiah the prophet gave a prophecy about His names. Pause for a moment to consider the depth of meaning in each of the names given.

First, a Child is born speaks of Jesus’ incarnation––born of a virgin, Mary. He was clothed in human flesh: So the Word became human and made his home among us ... And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son (John 1:14 NLT). Second, a Son is given reveals to us His deity––Jesus is the Son of God.

Third, the government will be upon His shoulder. He will reign on the earth. Psalm 96:10 reveals how He shall reign: “The Lord reigns; the world also is firmly established ... He shall judge the peoples righteously.” What an incredible day it will be when Jesus comes to rule and reign! “The kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever!” (Revelation 11:15).

Fourthly, Christ is our Wonderful Counselor. I love this name because it means that whenever we are in need of His divine counsel, we can take all our problems or situations to Him. Fifthly, Mighty God is a strong name that speaks of His infinite power.

Then our final two names. Everlasting Father reveals to us His eternal existence, and, in relation to us, He is the originator of time and eternity. As our Prince of Peace, this exalted name brings a renewed relationship between sinners and a holy God, the Father: And He came and preached peace to you who were afar off and to those who were near. For through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father (Ephesians 2:17-18). Do you have peace with God?

“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”
~Luke 2:14~
