The Progression of Joy

And being confident of this, I know that I shall remain and continue with you all for your progress and joy of faith, that your rejoicing for me may be more abundant in Jesus Christ by my coming to you again.
Philippians 1:25-26

Paul wrote the book of Philippians for the purpose of seeing the progression of spiritual growth in the lives of the believers in Philippi. He desired to see their joy despite their suffering. Paul knew the Christian life would not be easy, in fact he went from city to city strengthening the souls of the disciples, exhorting them to continue in the faith, and saying, “We must through many tribulations enter the kingdom of God” (Acts 14:22). Instead of becoming bitter, Paul encouraged joy of faith.

Christians need to understand why they suffer in this world. Many people have the mentality that Christians are not supposed to suffer. That is not what the Bible teaches. In John 16:33 Jesus said: “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” Every child of God has to go through the fire of affliction. Before Jesus returns for His Church, things are going to get extremely hard.

When I visit someone who is real sick with cancer, leukemia or they are paralyzed, instead of me ministering to them, I am the one often ministered to. I do not know what it is like to suffer from any of these ailments. Yet when any of us suffer we learn by experience, and can become more effective in our ministry to others. We can be a greater witness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I believe with all my heart, suffering can bring a real depth to a person’s commitment to Jesus Christ. Christians have hope and joy in knowing all things work together for His glory (Romans 8:28).

However, if you do not comprehend the perfect will of God in your suffering then you are going to be bitter. Without the love and joy of God you will become offensive to people. Come to a place where God breaks and molds you. Submit to God so He can do a work through you. Ask God to bring sweetness into your life instead of the bitterness.

Joy is the natural outcome of the Christian's obedience to the revealed will of God.
