Seeking Heavenly Things
If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.
Colossians 3:1-4
As born-again Christians––resurrected in the newness of life––our main focus is to be seeking spiritual things. Our values and priorities have completely changed. We are to seek first the Kingdom of God. This is really important because, as we are living our lives here on earth, we can easily become comfortable and attached to all the things we have gained.
I remember someone saying, “Hold on to things lightly in this life because there may come a time when God requires it.” Corrie ten Boom, a Dutch watchmaker, kept hundreds of Jews safe from the Nazis in World War II. It is believed Corrie and her family saved as many as 800 lives. Betrayed by a fellow Dutch citizen, the entire family was imprisoned. Her father and sister Betsie died in horrible conditions, yet Corrie, due to a clerical error, was released. Looking back on her life, she said: “I have held many things in my hands, and I have lost them all; but whatever I have placed in God’s hands, that, I still possess.”
Paul reminded believers to have that same mindset. Since we were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above. Those things where Christ is are permanent; the things on earth are only temporal. They are fleeting. This principle must be kept in your walk with Christ––walking in the light of eternity––seeking those things which are above.
Remember, for the believer, we have an upward call––heaven. Do not get so settled down in this world. Imagine, just around the corner of your temporal life is eternal life where you will be dwelling in the presence of God for all eternity.
Those who seek the treasures of this world miss out on inestimable treasures in God.
