Thanksgiving Blessings

Oh, give thanks to the LORD! Call upon His name; make known His deeds among the peoples!
Psalm 105:1

During Thanksgiving, we often pause to ponder the abundant blessings we have gained. This year, almost all families, in some way or another, have endured financial difficulties. They have struggled to put food on the table. It is easy to become downcast and look at life as a “glass half empty” but at Thanksgiving, we gain a different perspective, and it is helpful to see the “glass half full.” Look to see how God has blessed you despite your circumstances. Ask yourself, “How has God shown His faithfulness to me during this hardship?”

Consider the psalmist’s first words. He said: Oh, give thanks to the LORD! During Thanksgiving dinner, many families hold to the tradition of asking each family member what they are thankful for. Thanksgiving is a beautiful time to express our gratitude to God for answered prayers, His daily provisions, and for our loved ones and friends. America is a country blessed by God’s grace and mercy. This is something we can all be thankful for, because America is where the Gospel is freely preached.

I find this goes right along with what the psalmist has to say next. Call upon His name. The Gospel brings good news. Salvation is available to anyone who calls on the name of the LORD: For “whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved” (Romans 10:13). Lastly, the psalmist focuses our attention on what we need to be doing: ...make known His deeds among the peoples! God’s deeds are miraculous.

Are you sharing your faith with others so they can come to know Jesus, too? From before the beginning of time, God has worked on our behalf to save us (2 Timothy 1:9). Thanksgiving is a perfect time to share at the dinner table, or even online, the great things He has done for you.

May you also remember this Thanksgiving not only the obvious gifts that God has given you, but His spiritual blessings, as well. The greatest gift of all is Jesus Christ, and the salvation God offers us in Him.
