A Message Falling on Deaf Ears
And they listened to him until this word, and then they raised their voices and said, “Away with such a fellow from the earth, for he is not fit to live!” Then, as they cried out and tore off their clothes and threw dust into the air....
Acts 22:22-23
The Jews had been listening to Paul’s testimony in silence until he reached the point of mentioning the Gentiles. The moment he referred to being sent to them, they immediately raised their voices and began shouting. The riotous behavior continued. They wanted him killed.
If you are not familiar with Jewish culture, you will notice that they are a very emotional people. They make such a spectacle when they are upset––big time. On this occasion, even in front of Romans, the Jews began to tear their clothing and throw dirt up in the air! They went crazy––wailing and crying out loud. They hated Paul with a passion, and they loathed the Gentiles.
I find, when people hear the Gospel message, there are different reactions. Some are positive. Those realizing they are lost sinners in need of a Savior receive the message with thankful hearts. People who feel hopeless in this world suddenly find hope. Other responses are negative. Men and women become greatly offended at the Gospel because they do not see themselves as sinners. They see themselves as good. Those enjoying sin become very irate; they do not want to feel conviction or hear that what they are doing is wrong. Some people prefer to be left alone to enjoy their sin. They resist repentance.
Throughout the Gospels, Jesus said: “He who has ears to hear, let him hear!” (Matthew 13:9). What is your response to God’s Word? Has the Gospel message fallen on your deaf ears and hardened heart? Think again. May you not only open your ears to hear God’s Word, but have an open heart to receive it.
Our chaotic, confused world has no greater need than to hear the message of good news - the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
