A Priest Forever
And inasmuch as He was not made priest without an oath (for they have become priests without an oath, but He with an oath by Him who said to Him: “The Lord has sworn and will not relent, ‘You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek’ ”),by so much more Jesus has become a surety of a better covenant.
Hebrews 7:20-22
What does the law do? It makes us all guilty before a holy God. It points us to our need of redemption. Where the first covenant made with Israel was weak, the second covenant through Jesus Christ was better. The new covenant became a promise of salvation to both Jews and Gentiles:
Ephesians 3:5-6: ...it has now been revealed by the Spirit to His holy apostles and prophets: that the Gentiles should be fellow heirs, of the same body, and partakers of His promise in Christ through the gospel....
That is why God sent His Son to die for our sins (John 3:16). After the finished work of the Cross, Jesus became our Priest forever!
Hebrews 8:1-2: ...We have such a High Priest, who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens, a Minister of the sanctuary and of the true tabernacle which the Lord erected, and not man.
Hebrews 8:6: But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also Mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises....
As a Priest forever, Jesus is our Mediator and our Advocate:
1 Timothy 2:5: For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus...
1 John 2:1-2 NIV: My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.
Literally, we have been given the promises of a new and better covenant.
This is now a covenant of pure grace; let no man attempt to mix works with it.
